Aerobics classes

Aerobics is a type of exercise that combines rhythmic movement and dance-like exercises with music with the goal of improving flexibility, strength, and cardio-vascular fitness. It is usually performed in a group setting led by an instructor, although it can be done solo and without musical accompaniment.

Aerobics mainly involves the upper and lower limbs and lumbar spine. All the joints listed in the table below are used during an aerobics class. The face and jaw are not commonly associated with aerobics but in all other respects aerobics is a whole body exercise system and involves many different movements.

Aerobics mostly requires lumbar flexion, extension, sidebending and rotation, scapula retraction, protraction, elevation and depression, shoulder flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, internal rotation and external rotation, elbow flexion and extension, hip flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, internal rotation and external rotation, knee flexion and extension and ankle dorsiflexion and plantar flexion.

In addition to stretching the prime movers also stretch their antagonists and the joint stabiliser and neutraliser muscles.
